More Moab
There are other things around Moab besides the 2 national parks. We also visited Deadhorse Point State Park. The point is 2000 feet above the Colorado River, with Canyonlands in the background. The legend is that in the 1800 the point was used as a corral for wild mustangs. Cowboys herded them across the narrow neck of land and onto the point, and then fenced them in with brush and branches. One time, for an unknown reason, they did not return and the horses died of thirst, 2000 feet above the Colorado River. It’s a horrible story, but one heck of a view:
The river meanders and creates this point.
Another day we went on a scenic drive along the Colorado River:
The river was rolling along.
We stopped to view some more petroglyphs:
According to the book I got, the long lines with the cross marks are mesas or escarpments, the spirals mean that a settlement was abandoned when the people migrated to a new place, and the second symbol from the left on the top of the left picture is the symbol of the bear clan. There are lots of symbols for people and some animals too.
We also saw the Jug Handle Arch:
There are arches and windows everywhere! We enjoyed our stay in Moab- there is a lot to see between all of the parks, and there are a lot of restaurants and shops. We wanted to take a trip on the Colorado River, but the delay in our trip and the cold weather ended that opportunity. Our next stop is a small town about 60 miles away, where we will be able to easily visit some other sites!
