We made it to Amarillo!

Today we left Albuquerque and drove to Amarillo. The trip took an extra 2 hours because they were doing roadwork on I-40 in Albuquerque, so the road went from 4 lanes to 1, taking us almost 2 hours to go about 6 miles! UGH! We found a detour, but that exit was closed, so we were stuck. Question- why don’t they do roadwork like that at night when there is a lot less traffic?

Most of the eastern part of New Mexico was flat and high desert, but there were a few mesas and a little more interesting scenery. We did see a couple deer next to the freeway!

We made it to Amarillo, and the scenery here is VERY similar to Arizona and parts of New Mexico- except they have giant windmills in Texas, which is good because the wind was blowing when we got here. The first thing we did when we got to the campground is put on jeans and sweatshirts- it was only 61 degrees! Such a change from the 92 degrees we had in Albuquerque just 2 days ago!

We got set up and realized we had somehow lost our sewer hose along the way– don’t know how that happened, especially since it was in it’s holder which was sealed with a cap (which is also gone!), but we had another, so are good to go.

We went to dinner at the Big Texan Steakhouse, a very large and popular restaurant that features a free 72 oz. steak- IF you can eat it, plus all the sides in 1 hour or less! While we were eating someone started that challenge- he still had 20 minutes to go when we left, but I don’t think he was going to make it because he still had a lot to eat! Question- WHY would you want to eat a 72 oz. steak? There were articles about the restaurant on the walls in the bar, and one was saying that you should expect to feel sick for 72 hours after eating all that– doesn’t sound fun to me! There’s a concert going on next to the campground- not sure who it is but they sound pretty good- especially since we didn’t have to pay to hear the music! 😉
