Upcountry South Carolina
We are camping in Roebuck, a small town between Greenville and Spartanburg. We really liked Greenville last year, so we wanted to take another look. Our primary objective (which we keep losing sight of) is to:
1- find an area that offers what we want (i.e. shopping, restaurants, good healthcare, outdoor activities, etc.)
2- determine if real estate is reasonably available and well priced- either a lot to build on or houses that are fairly up to date (or inexpensive enough that we can afford to update).
Asheville is out- way too expensive, and we did not find the people to be the friendly southerners we expected. Greenville hits all the items in #1, and housing is well priced, IF you want a tract home on top of your neighbors. We found a builder we like last year, and we revisited them, but the houses in the neighborhoods are sooooo close. We aren’t ruling it out, but we will continue to look.
Before starting on our real estate quest the first morning we stopped at our favorite fast food breakfast place and saw this:
First time we have seen anything like that- I guess their parking brake doesn’t work!
We found a lot online that looked promising (we spend A LOT of time looking at Realtor.com!):
But then we really looked at it and it was VERY narrow in the front, and kind of fell off the back once you got into the trees- darn! Look at the jungle that would have to be cleared away!
Jerry started looking father afield and found that real estate in Greenwood, about an hour from Greenville, is a lot less expensive, so we made a day of it and found some nice lots:
The one on the left just sold (and for a really good price!), and the one on the right is not on the market- darn, because it would be perfect!
We drove around the pond and found an even better lot, but it is already under contract- double darn!
We found another lot in a VERY nice development:
but it was a golf course community (WAS being the operative word)- the golf course bones are still there (cart paths, holes, etc.), but it is not being maintained (gravel in the sandtraps, greens not kept up, etc.), and nobody seems to know what is going to happen with it. We just don’t want to take a chance on that.
Still looking….
