Light houses
You can’t visit the OBX without seeing lighthouses! We visited 2, although there are 7- too much driving and traffic between them! the first we saw was the Currituck lighthouse:
There was a long line to climb to the top, plus they said there are no handrails- that’s a big NO for me!
We walked around the area and visited an art fair that was going on. We also saw the Whalehead Club:
Originally built as a home, then it was a hunting club, a boys school and a rocket fuel testing facility. It fell into disrepair until Carrituck County acquired the building and 39 acres which is now a park, and the house is being restored.
We also saw the Bodie Island lighthouse:
Reservations to climb to the top were all taken, so we could not enjoy the view from the top. We did see a cute critter while walking around the grounds, though:
We started driving down to the next light house in Hatteras, but turned around because it was getting late and we were starving!
Speaking of starving- fish here is different from what we are used to, and we are being adventurous: I tried catfish (delicious), pollock (tasteless and dry), and soft shell crabs (not as flavorful as I thought they would be), and Jerry tried catfish and tilefish- both delicious!
As we drove around we noticed the different architecture of the homes here on the OBX:
They are open underneath and the house is elevated because of frequent flooding from storm surges, hurricanes and king tides. There are a TON of vacation rental homes, both large and small- how about this one:
We did go to the beach while on the OBX, and like others I have shown you take a boardwalk over the dunes:
And down the other side!
One day at the beach we saw dolphins:
It was a little breezy when we walked on the Hatteras National Seashore:
And we have seen quite a bit of rain while here. This was our view as we were driving back towards our campground one day:
Driving into the storm! And after the rain we got this:
And here is a sunset from our campground on the Inner Banks:
We were supposed to leave today to move towards Raleigh-Durham, but there is a level 3 weather warning this evening of 70 MPH wind gusts and 2 inch hail, so we decided to stay where we are for one more night, rather than risk damage to the truck, trailer and us! So I got caught up on our blog- YAY! I doubt that will last very long!!
