Three states in one day
When we left South Dakota we saw some interesting scenery:
And drove through a little tip of Wyoming:
And then into Montana:
We just spent 2 nights (1 day) and visited the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.
It was very interesting (and warm) as we took the self-guided driving tour. We got lucky and came upon a tour group where the guide was talking about part of the battle, and later heard a park ranger talking about Custer’s last stand. I had thought all of the 7th cavalry soldiers were killed in the battle, but less than half were killed- and most of those (210) were with Custer. White granite monuments mark where soldiers were killed, and red granite monuments mark where Indians were killed- and they dot the battlefield, which is really quite large.
They have moved all of the unknown soldier’s remains to a common burial site, overlooked by this monument:
And there is a Native American monument:
We went out late that night to look at stars- there were so many, and we could see a tiny bit of the Milky Way, but there was still too much light. We hope to go to a Dark Sky place when we get to Nevada- fingers crossed!
